چکیده

In order to study the effect of viscosity on bubbles in a cavitating fluid, the properties of laser-induced bubbles and the resulting luminescence pulses are examined for various glycerol-water mixtures over 1-8 bars of pressure. Bubbles are generated by a Nd:YAG laser, with the bubble radius monitored by a laser-beam photodiode system and the luminescence structure measured by fast photomultiplier. Observable luminescence disappears at 75% volume glycerol solution, and luminescence is found to be more common at higher pressures and lower glycerol concentrations. The bubbles are seen to oscillate more in the glycerol mixtures than in water, and the maximum radius of the bubble appears to decrease with concentration.

Determination and Modeling of Activity Coefficients of Sodium Chloride in (Glycerol + Water) Mixtures Based on Potentiometric Measurements

In this work, the results concerning to the mean activity coefficient measurements for NaCl in the (glycerol + water) system using the potentiometric method are reported. The potentiometric measurements were performed on the galvanic cells without liquid junction of the type: Ag|AgCl|NaCl (m), glycerol (wt%), H2O (1 - wt)%|Na-ISE, in various mixed solvent systems containing 0, 5, 10,...

Communication: Bubbles, crystals, and laser-induced nucleation.

Short intense laser pulses of visible and infrared light can dramatically accelerate crystal nucleation from transparent solutions; previous studies invoke mechanisms that are only applicable for nucleation of ordered phases or high dielectric phases. However, we show that similar laser pulses induce CO(2) bubble nucleation in carbonated water. Additionally, in water that is cosupersaturated wi...

Subsurface photodisruption in pig skin as monitored by high-frequency ultrasound

For diagnostic or therapeutic technologies using femtosecond laser-induced optical breakdown (LIOB) in turbid biological tissues, pulses of sufficient fluence must be delivered to the site of interest. As light attenuates and diffuses rapidly due to wavelength-dependent absorption and scattering, it is important to develop penetration optimization schemes. In this study, we use a high frequency...

Spectrum of Luminescence from Laser-induced Bubbles in Water and Cryogenic Liquids

The spectrum of the luminescence pulse from collapsing laser-induced bubbles in water and cryogenic liquids has been measured. For small bubbles in water the spectrum approximates that of a black-body at about 7800 K, while for bubbles whose maximum radius is greater than 1 mm the OH* molecular band at 310 nm becomes apparent, a feature which is also seen in multi-bubble sonoluminescence. The l...

Hydrogen bonding and the cryoprotective properties of glycerol/water mixtures.

Molecular dynamics simulations and infrared spectroscopy were used to determine the hydrogen bond patterns of glycerol and its mixtures with water. The ability of glycerol/water mixtures to inhibit ice crystallization is linked to the concentration of glycerol and the hydrogen bonding patterns formed by these solutions. At low glycerol concentrations, sufficient amounts of bulk-like water exist...
